"Emotional Therapy"

Letting Out Suppressed Emotions

A couple of days ago, a friend told me about Emotional Therapy. He said that it is about letting out emotions that we have suppressed. Technique? Letting it all out. He would be in his car, on his way to work, and would scream.

Growing up, we have experiences that teach us that expressing our feelings is not okay. Our culture forces us to suppress our feelings as they come up. Anger, sadness, fear... However, it is crucial to our emotional and mental health that we express these feelings in a healthy way. We are not to deny our feelings, but to express them.

How It Works

I couldn't find information on this type of therapy online. However, I do recall reading about something very similar to this from Steve Jobs biography. Jobs used to do do Primal Therapy, which focuses on the patient's earliest emotional experiences and encourages verbal and other expressions of the pain. He would go in to a session and scream as much as he needs to.

Key Point...

The point here is that emotions are not to be neglected. We must know what we are feeling at the time, and express these feelings in healthy ways that won't harm ourselves or others.

This is the basis of emotional intelligence, which is a crucial part of us that enables us to have great relationships, career, and life.
