"5 Benefits of Honesty"
There is a reason why honesty is considered an important value by many cultures and religions. I always thought that when God commands us to do something, it is because it is good for us to do so. And one of his 10 commandments is to be honest.
The cost of dishonesty is more than one can handle. It keeps us hidden and alone--people don't know what is going on with you, and thus they do not know how to help you.
Here are some ways that we can benefit from being honest with ourselves and with others:
1. You Are Not Ashamed
It is hard for us to respect ourselves when we are dishonest. On the other hand, when we are honest with others and ourselves, we have nothing to be ashamed of because everything is on the table! You do not have to tell EVERYBODY about EVERYTHING, but when it's your time to speak, use the rule: "Just be honest."
2. You Can Create Meaningful Relationships
Active lying is when you say you didn't eat your friend's cookie when you did.
Passive lying is when you don't tell your friend that you are angry at them when you ARE angry.
Passive lying is something that we are less aware of. By learning to be assertive and expressive of our feelings, we can create meaningful relationships that is understanding and healthy.
3. Opens Doors for Opportunity, Luck, and Pleasant Surprises
When you are honest to others and open about sharing about yourself with them, you are creating resources for yourself. I remember when I met Jenny for the first time at an open mic night and told her that I'm planning on a trip to NYC, she got actively involved in trying to connect me with her friend in NYC that could possibly help me.
4. Emotionally Freeing
This is the best part. You can truly LET GO.
It is emotionally extremely tiring to lie.
5. Promotes Recovery
Honesty with yourself and others is ESSENTIAL for recovery from child abuse. The more we hide and withdraw, the slower the process will be. If we are open to our vulnerability and willing to let others help us, the recovery will be promoted.
Afterthoughts...
The habit of honesty will take us to a higher level in terms of success in our career, relationships, and health. Remember, there is deep wisdom in this teaching that we have received in Kindergarten!
