"Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence"

Model on the Wall

Here is a good news: Nobody has the power to make you feel a certain way. YES! NOBODY! It comes from the trigger and your past experiences. This is why you can learn to manage your emotions, overwhelming emotions is not a life-sentence!

You emotions are YOURS and nobody else's. You have the right to control and regulate your emotions just as you choose your clothes! You just need to LEARN how to do it.

Self-awareness is the base of emotional intelligence. It is: knowing WHAT emotions you are feeling when you're feeling them and being able to name them. When your self-awareness improves, your ability to understand others' emotions and the ability to regulate your own will improve.

Practice

"I" Statements

Express how you feel using "I" statements, and avoid "you" statements such as "You are so lazy!"

ex. "I feel frustrated when I come into the kitchen seeing the dishes are not clean."

Remember to be non-judgmental.

Do not say, "I feel frustrated because you didn't do the dishes again.", "you are messy", "I feel disrespected", Instead, use non-judgmental observations to form your sentence!

TIP: If you can substitute "think" for the word "feel", it is a judgment.
